So, I know what you’re thinking. “What in the world is a Christmas Eve box?” Well, I’ll tell you.
A Christmas Eve box is a festive tradition that has become popular in recent years, especially in some Western countries. It typically involves preparing a special box or container filled with small gifts, treats, and activities to be opened and enjoyed on the night of December 24th, which is Christmas Eve. This is a very new tradition for my family, but if you’re a Goofy Christmas-loving person like me, you may adopt the tradition too.
The contents of a Christmas Eve box can vary, but they often include items like family-matching pajamas, cocoa, maybe a book, and a movie. Sometimes, you put in a small single gift for each child as well. Some families create individual boxes for each member of their family, but we like to do ONE BIG BOX that has all of our goodies in it.
The idea behind the Christmas Eve box is to create a sense of excitement and anticipation for the upcoming Christmas morning. Opening the box and enjoying its contents can become a cherished tradition for families, helping to make Christmas Eve a special and memorable occasion. Families often customize the contents of the box to suit their traditions and preferences. Your family’s Christmas Eve box will be different than mine. However, I am going to tell you what my family is putting in our kit this Christmas Eve. I’ll even add a checklist at the bottom for you to jot down after the fact.
1. A Christmas Box
The first step is to choose the ideal container. If each family member is receiving their own box, a simple shoe box is usually spacious enough to do the trick. However, for those planning to craft a collective box for the entire family to share, consider opting for a larger Amazon box or even a charming little chest if you’re feeling a little fancy.
2. Pajamas
In our household, we love the tradition of donning matching pajamas, but the beauty of a Christmas Eve box is that it can be tailored to your unique preferences. This year, I found a wonderful set at Old Navy that not only fits the bill but also offers matching options for our furry friends (if that’s your cup of tea).
To complete the cozy ensemble, consider adding a pair of fuzzy socks to the mix, ensuring everyone stays warm and comfortable. And for those extra chilly nights, including a snuggly blanket for the whole family to huddle under adds an extra layer of warmth and togetherness to the occasion. 3. A Movie
This year, we’re all aboard ‘The Polar Express.’ My husband totally caught me by surprise with this cute Christmas card and movie combo he snagged at Walmart. Although we’ve yet to indulge in our Christmas Eve Box this year, we’re already looking forward to next year, when we’ll embark on another festive adventure with ‘The Santa Clause.’
When starting your own Christmas Eve box tradition, I highly recommend kicking it off with a beloved holiday classic that you know will bring joy to your entire family.

4. A Book
When it comes to stocking your Christmas Eve box, a good rule of thumb is to include a shorter book that’s perfect for a cozy pre-bedtime read. In our household, we’re huge fans of the classic tale, ‘The Night Before Christmas.’ It’s become a cherished tradition, so this year, it’s earned a prime spot in our festive kit.
5. Snacks/Drinks
A Christmas Eve box isn’t just a box; it’s a whole experience! And what’s an experience without some delectable treats to savor, right?
Who can resist the charm of a warm cup of cocoa, especially when paired with a classic Christmas movie? But hey, if you’re more of a soda enthusiast, keep an eye out for Sprite and Canada Dry’s cranberry sodas – they’ve been a game-changer in our household. Plus, they’re caffeine-free, making them perfect for late-night celebrations!
In our box, we’re jazzing things up with individual cocoa balls for that cozy cocoa fix. And of course, we’re packing in some of the kids’ all-time favorite snacks. Whether you prefer DIY bags of trail mix or cheese balls or opt for the convenience of prepackaged goodies, the choice is all yours. And if movie-style candy boxes are calling your name, why not go all in? After all, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, and Christmas Eve only rolls around once, so let’s make it extra special!”
6. Cookies
As a devoted ‘Christmas Parent,’ the tradition of setting out cookies for Santa is one of the most sacred moments that add magic to the holiday season. For some families, the joy lies in spending quality time together, immersing themselves in the process of baking homemade cookies from scratch—a perfect bonding experience with the kids. From licking the bowl clean to using cookie cutters for the perfect shapes and decorating them with flair, it’s a festive adventure.
However, if your baking prowess is a work in progress, fear not! You can go to just about any store to buy a bag of pre-packaged cookie mix. These are super uncomplicated; just add water and eggs, mix, and follow the straightforward baking directions. You can still enjoy the fun of using cookie cutters and decorating with store-bought icing.
Now, for those who prefer a more effortless approach, or if you are just a sugar cookie addict like me, Walmart has these fantastic sugar cookies for all of the holiday seasons. They take 10 minutes to bake and are always soft and chewy. As an added bonus, they are pre-decorated. This means no extra cleaning, no sticky or colored icing everywhere—it’s just a quick pop on a cookie sheet and into the oven. There are a ton in the pack, so it’s perfect for the family to eat and still have a few leftovers for Santa!

7. Game or Toy
There’s nothing quite like the bonding that happens when the family gathers around a board game. And the beauty of it is, you don’t have to rush out to grab a brand-new Christmas-themed board game (although, if you’re game, pun intended, it could be a blast). Two classics like ‘The Game of Life’ and ‘Candyland’ make fantastic choices. They’re simple, entertaining, and won’t keep you up playing for hours like Monopoly might.
To sweeten the pot, consider tucking in a small toy or another delightful gift that everyone can relish. A stocking stuffer is the perfect size and festive charm, it fits the bill perfectly. After all, the best moments are shared, and it’s these little touches that make Christmas Eve truly magical.

8. Your own personal touch
Christmas Eve is all about making memories, and one lovely way to do that is by adding a personal touch to your Christmas Eve box.
In our family, we’ve turned ornament shopping into a cherished tradition. Early in the season, we pack up the family and head out to Hobby Lobby, where each of us picks out an ornament that speaks to us. It’s a little piece of us to hang on the big tree in our family room, and it makes the holiday season even more special.
This year, I decided to add another layer of enchantment by creating ‘Polar Express’ tickets for each member of our crew. It’s these unique, personalized touches that make Christmas Eve truly magical.
